Leeds Metropolitan University - V-c moots name change

五月 22, 2008

Simon Lee, vice-chancellor of Leeds Metropolitan University, has suggested that the institution change its name to include the word "Carnegie". Professor Lee believes introducing the name, which is already the name of the university's sports faculty, would highlight its links with Yorkshire's sports clubs, such as Leeds's rugby union side, which bears the same name, and Yorkshire's one-day cricket team. The Carnegie sports faculty is named after Carnegie Physical Training College, which opened in Leeds in the 1930s with the aid of a UK Carnegie Trust grant. Professor Lee told the Yorkshire Post: "I think it would make sense to have a name that is more distinctive. There is another university in Leeds, there is a very good college in Trinity and All Saints, then there are the further education colleges in Leeds as well. There are also a lot of institutions ... with the word 'metropolitan' in the title." The university's governors are due to discuss the matter in the autumn.
