Leeds Metropolitan University - Creationist installation removed

三月 13, 2008

An exhibition promoting creationism has been removed from Leeds Metropolitan University after protests from staff. The large exhibition in the Leslie Silver Building, which houses the university's library and reception, included video installations promoting the views of prominent Turkish creationist Adnan Oktar, who uses the pseudonym Harun Yahya. Mr Oktar founded the Scientific Research Foundation, which has campaigned against the teaching of evolution. A member of the University and College Union at Leeds Met complained about the display, saying: "This pernicious anti-academic organisation would seem to have no place - let alone a prestigious one outside the library - in our university ... it is a huge embarrassment to find it prominently featured." Sally Brown, a pro vice-chancellor, said the display had been removed because it had been put up by students from the Islamic Society without authorisation.
