Bureaucracy 'strangling' FE, says Harwood
Learning and Skills Council chief John Harwood has promised to reduce the bureacracy that colleges claim is strangling further education. But he has denied a growth in bureaucracy under the LSC, which took over college funding and planning in April. He told the education and skills select committee yesterday that the LSC had been burdened with inherited structures and costs.

BMA warns against health care on the cheap
Intermediate care services featured in the government’s NHS Plan for England must not be seen as a cheap option for patient care, doctors' leaders warned today. A new report from the British Medical Association and the Royal College of GPs, calls for a substantial expansion of the numbers of family doctors and nurses with the necessary education, training and support.

V-C brands league tables 'misguided'
Coventry University vice-chancellor has condemned higher education league tables as “misguided”. Michael Goldstein, speaking at an awards ceremony yesterday, said the performance tables demonstrated an “appalling ignorance” of the purpose of modern education. 

Big boys don't swat
Teenage boys who underachieve at state schools could be ignoring their work because they believe it is not masculine to study, according to research released today. The report by Stephen Frosh, professor of psychology at Birkbeck College, University of London, former colleague Rob Pattman and Ann Phoenix from the Open University, found their counterparts at public schools had the opposite attitude to academic success.

NI learning minister bids for £21m
Sean Farren, Northern Ireland’s minister for employment and learning, is seeking bids for £21 million of European Social Funding for training and employment projects. Successful projects will be funded for up to two years.
