BSE blunder leaves consumers in doubt
Scientists at the Institute of Animal Health in Edinburgh, who have been trying to find out if BSE has infected sheep, have mistakenly been testing the brains of cows, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs admitted today. The blunder means that consumers do not know if sheep are safe to eat.
Government targets social work
The government launched a £1.5 million recruitment drive today to encourage applicants for social work training. It hopes to boost the number of applicants by 5,000. Research on public perceptions of social workers has highlighted a negative image of the profession.
