Three AUT leadership contenders emerge
Three internal contenders have emerged for the vacant general secretary’s job at the Association of University Teachers. They are: Brian Everett, regional assistant general secretary responsible for the North West; Sally Hunt, assistant general secretary responsible for equal opportunities; and Penny Holloway, a member of the AUT executive and a lecturer at the University of Ulster.
One million computers fight cancer
One million computers, from Azerbaijan to Zambia, have downloaded a screensaver that uses a PC’s idle time to screen for anti-cancer drugs. The project, launched in April by Oxford University’s chemistry department, has so far used 50,000 years' worth of computer time to screen 3.5 billion molecules against two protein targets for cancer-fighting ability.
Scotland cuts hours for trainee doctors
Nearly all Scotland’s pre-registration trainee doctors have had their working hours reduced, according to figures released today by the Scottish Executive. Some 97 per cent of them are reported to be working 56 hours a week, compared with 13 per cent in March.
