Scots promise £18,000-plus to new teachers
Scotland’s education minister Jack McConnell was today launching the second phase of Scotland’s teacher recruitment drive at Strathclyde University’s education faculty. The Scottish Executive wants to recruit 2,900 extra teachers by 2006 by offering a basic starting salary of £18,315 and improved conditions.

Female hospital lecturers win settlement
Two female lecturers at maximum security Ashworth Hospital on Merseyside have received a substantial settlement following a three-year battle to win the same pay and contract terms as a male colleague. The two part-timers had been offered full-time jobs at £8,000 a year less than him.

Student dies in horrific motorway accident
Police are appealing for witnesses after a student from the University of Wales in Cardiff was catapulted through his car windscreen into the path of motorway traffic that failed to stop after running over him at speed early on Saturday morning.
