Government boosts fast-track teaching scheme
A scheme that offers graduates a fast-track route into teaching is to be expanded to meet demand, the government announced today. School standards minister Stephen Timms said that head teachers in England would be able to apply for £4,000 grants to cover the costs of providing in-school training for degree holders.
Debt anxiety linked to depression
Fear of debt makes students more likely to suffer from depression, researchers have found. Student Debt: The Causes and Consequences of Undergraduate Borrowing in the UK, a book edited by academics at Bath and Exeter universities, also says that about two-thirds of students over-estimate their likely salaries.
Children in care miss out on health advice
Children in local authority care receive “significantly worse” health care than those living in a family home, according to a study published today. Those in care often missed out on sexual health and lifestyle advice, and had higher levels of teenage pregnancy, said researchers at the University of Wales, Swansea.
Cystitis sufferers fear far worse illness
A survey of 100 female university students who had suffered from cystitis found that 40 per cent initially thought they had a much more severe illness. The survey was commissioned by drugs manufacturer Roche Consumer Health for Cystitis Action Week, which began today.
