Government plans more city academies
The government wants to open up a wider debate on improving education for 14 to 19-year-olds, according to a white paper published today. Schools Achieving Success confirms the government’s intention to establish more city academies - schools built and run with a mixture of taxpayers’ money and finance from sponsors.
'Make mobile phones more expensive'
Sir William Stewart, the scientist who chaired an inquiry into the hazards of mobile phones, claimed today that adverts aimed at children were “irresponsible”. Sir William, president of the British Association for the Advancement of Science, called for phones to be made more expensive to protect children’s health.
Team uses dogs to track disease gene
Big-hearted Newfoundland dogs are helping scientists track down the gene responsible for an inherited human heart illness, it was disclosed today. Joanna Dukes-McEwan and a team at Edinburgh University are studying the dogs in an attempt to locate the gene thought to be responsible for dilated cardiomyopathy.
