Slump in science applications
The number of people signing up to do degrees in the traditional science subjects of physics, chemistry and biology is down this year compared with 2000, according to the latest figures from the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service.

Bishop calls for freedom for the elderly
The former bishop of Edinburgh Richard Holloway will call for society to stop shutting elderly people away in care and residential homes, in his keynote speech to the British Society of Gerontology's annual conference at Stirling University this weekend. He will say that the perils of freedom for older people are better than the securities of protection.

Wolverhampton to build £4m judo centre
Wolverhampton University has been given outline planning permission to build a £4 million national judo centre at its Walsall campus. The National Lottery has earmarked £2.6 million for the project with the remaining £1.4 million coming from the university.
