Genetics firms battle over chickens
University of Georgia-based AviGenics has filed a lawsuit in the United States to prevent Edinburgh's Roslin Institute and US biotech firm Viragen from pursuing research into genetically altered chickens. AviGenics claims the institute “misappropriated” research pioneered in its laboratories. Roslin and Viragen plan to defend the suit.
Internet could reduce social exclusion
Researchers at Southampton University investigating the links between transport and social exclusion are looking at the role of “virtual” mobility through the internet. Researcher Susan Kenyon said: “If people could use the internet to access information about jobs and healthcare, their exclusion might be reduced.”
Teacher training improves lectures
Training university lecturers to teach improves student learning, an Open University study has shown. The outcome of the three-year study led by Graham Gibbs suggests that accredited training programmes can improve teaching standards in university to the benefit of students.
