Clarke bids for university vote
Conservative leadership candidate Kenneth Clarke this week promised a compact between the state and universities. His personal manifesto to Tory members said: “I want to end the alienation of the Conservative Party from the universities." Mr Clarke’s rival, Iain Duncan Smith, did not mention higher education in his manifesto.

Britain to woo foreign students via internet
The British Council has chosen a consortium led by the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service and Hotcourses to develop a website for international students. The site, due to be launched in spring 2002, will offer a comprehensive, searchable list of courses along with advice on visas, fees and accommodation.

Scottish research finds window on web
The Scottish Higher Education Funding Council will next month launch a pilot website to showcase Scottish university research. The site, www.ScottishResearch.com , will let business, funding bodies and research partners find out about researchers, projects and the latest advances.
