Most trainee teachers are white females
Universities have no chance of redressing gender or ethnic imbalances among trainee teachers because they have too little choice about who to take, according to a leading educationalist. Tables compiled by Alan Smithers and Pamela Robinson at the Centre for Education and Employment Research, University of Liverpool, show that entrants are still overwhelmingly female and white.
Birmingham centre uses brain in publicity drive
A giant replica of a human brain was being unveiled in Victoria Square, Birmingham, today to publicise Millennium Point, a £114 million Lottery-funded science, technology and learning attraction. The centre will house Thinktank, Birmingham’s new museum of science and discovery, the region’s first Imax cinema and the Technology Innovation Centre for education and businesses.
Breakthrough in treatment for kidney damage
Cells in bone marrow can be turned into kidney tissue, scientists revealed today. The discovery could lead to new treatments for kidney damage caused by cancer and other diseases. The findings are the result of joint work by the Imperial Cancer Research Fund at St Bartholomew’s Hospital and Imperial College School of Medicine.
