Hefce to review support for teaching
The funding of teaching and non-science research will be investigated by the Higher Education Funding Council for England. It will review what physical and staff resources are needed to support teaching, and arts and humanities research. JM Consulting will perform the study.
Morris simplifies AS-level exam
The number of AS-level papers first-year sixth formers have to sit will be cut, the government announced today. Students will sit single tests of up to three hours rather than large numbers of shorter papers, education secretary Estelle Morris said. Key skills will also to be revamped, she said.
Students clear man of robbery charge
A man who spent eight years in prison for robbery has had his conviction overturned after a group of law students took his case to the Court of Appeal. The students at the University of Northumbria examined Alex Allan’s case as part of their studies. They cleared his name despite the failure in 1994 of an appeal by a human rights group.
Glasgow awards Billy Connolly honorary degree
Comedian Billy Connolly went back to his roots today as he received an honorary degree from the University of Glasgow. The 59-year-old was awarded a Doctor of Letters in recognition of his contribution to Scottish arts and popular culture.
