Queen's Speech promises education reform
Education reform was promised in the Queen’s Speech at the State Opening of Parliament today. An education bill will be introduced to promote diversity and higher standards, particularly in secondary schools.

AUT members accept pay offer
Members of the Association of University Teachers have voted overwhelmingly in favour of this year’s pay offer. More than 90 per cent of members accepted the deal, which will give lecturers up to 5.1 per cent. The deal is dependent on the acceptance of all eight higher education unions. Some ballot results are still pending.

Graduates unfazed by debts
Students graduating this summer are not worried by their record debts and are confident of landing successful, lucrative jobs, according a survey. High Fliers Research, which questioned 14,115 final-year students, found that the average graduate from the class of 2001 faced debts of £5,900, but expected an average first-job salary of £25,000.

Glasgow unveils Mandela portrait
A portrait of Nelson Mandela was unveiled today to celebrate South Africa’s links with Glasgow Caledonian University. The life-size work by Scottish painter Anne Mackintosh will hang in the university’s Govan Mbeki Building.

Dean finishes 2,000km anniversary run
Neil Garrod, Glasgow University’s dean of law and financial studies, arrives in the city today on the last lap of his 2,000km run from Rome. He retraced the route of the papal bull founding the university in 1451 as part of its 550th anniversary celebrations.
