Leak row exam board highlights pupil pressures
Edexcel, the exam board at the centre of the leaked A-level papers row, has highlighted the pressures on pupils to get into university as a reason for cheating. David Hart, the general secretary of the National Association of Head Teachers, told the BBC: “This is clear evidence that some students will stop at nothing to get better results and secure university places under the new highly competitive system.”
Glasgow pays tribute to Dewar
Glasgow University is honouring the memory of former graduate Donald Dewar, the first Scottish first minister, by launching a £1.7 million appeal to establish a chair of social justice. The appeal has been inaugurated by a £150,000 donation from ScottishPower. The chair will promote teaching and research on the origins and extent of social exclusion and disadvantage.
Scots scholars get royal honour
The Duke of Edinburgh will next month present Royal Medals to three Scots nominated by the Royal Society of Edinburgh for their outstanding scholarship: Nobel laureate Sir James Black, who discovered beta-blocker drugs, historian Tom Devine and chemist Ian Scott.
