New minister appointed for higher education
Tony Blair has appointed Margaret Hodge minister of state for lifelong learning and higher education in his cabinet reshuffle. Ms Hodge, former junior minister for employment and equal opportunities, will cover universities, adult skills, and post-16 education and training, including further education. The MP for Barking is a graduate of the London School of Economics.
Lord Sainsbury stays in science post
Lord Sainsbury will retain his post as minister for science. The post, officially parliamentary secretary at the department of trade and industry, is unpaid.

Arson suspected in City blaze investigation
Police investigating the fire that devastated City University’s historic College Building suspect arson. Islington CID has launched an investigation into the blaze. One theory is that the fire started in a post box used by students to submit essays.
