Estelle Morris steps into Blunkett's shoes
Estelle Morris has been confirmed as secretary of state for education and skills. She replaces David Blunkett, who moves to home secretary. Ms Morris, formerly schools minister, will run a reorganised education department. Employment has been hived off to a new department of work and pensions.

Patricia Hewitt lands trade and industry
Patricia Hewitt replaces Stephen Byers as secretary of state for trade and industry, with responsibility for science. Mr Byers has become secretary of state for transport, local government and the regions. Other ministerial shuffles are expected later today and will be published on The THES website as they emerge.

Glasgow plans social justice chair
Glasgow University has launched a £1.7 million appeal to establish a chair of social justice to commemorate the late Donald Dewar, former Scottish first minister. The appeal has been inaugurated by a £150,000 donation from ScottishPower.
