Academics fill ranks of people's peers
Edinburgh University vice-chancellor Sir Stewart Sutherland and former government chief scientist Sir Robert May are among the first 15 “people’s” peers. Also included are Michael Chan, visiting professor in ethnic health at the University of Liverpool; Ilora Finlay, vice-dean of the University of Wales School of Medicine; Susan Greenfield, professor of pharmacology at the University of Oxford; and Sir Claus Moser, chairman of the Basic Skills Agency.

UUK welcomes baby bonds
Universities UK has welcomed the government’s baby bond plan under which £500 savings accounts would be started for children. “Any proposals that encourage young people who currently miss out on university to consider higher education should be welcomed,” said Baroness Warwick.

Lang inaugurated as St Andrews head
Brian Lang, former chief executive of the British Library, will be installed today as principal of St Andrews University in a ceremony including a procession through the town.
