AUT attacks Tory endowment plan
The Association of University Teachers today called Conservative plans to endow universities with up to £1 billion ill-conceived. AUT general secretary David Triesman attacked the party’s plans while launching the union's own general election manifesto.

Edinburgh honours genome scientist
Sir John Sulston, one of the scientists behind the mapping of the human genome, will be presented with the Edinburgh medal for scientific achievement by the City of Edinburgh Council during the forthcoming Edinburgh International Science Festival.

Subsidiary exams take hold in sixth forms
Seven out of ten sixth-form students will sit four of the new advanced subsidiary exams this year, according to latest figures from the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service. Many universities say they will continue to base place offers on the traditional A-level results.
