Bill aims to double repayment threshold
A bill was published today doubling the income threshold for student loan repayments and imposing a capped market rate of interest on those repayments. Conservative MP Nick St Aubyn (Guildford) wants to raise the income threshold to £20,000 a year and limit the interest charged on the debt to no more than 2 per cent above base rate.
Peers attack obstacles to cannabis research
Valuable research into the therapeutic use of cannabis has been constrained by Home Office bureaucracy and the stigma attached to the drug, according to today’s report by the House of Lords science and technology select committee. Peers were concerned by the long time it took to produce medicines from recent trials.
Visually impaired get support from Edinburgh
Edinburgh University today launched Visual Impairment Scotland, an organisation based in its education faculty that aims to reduce the feelings of isolation affecting visually impaired children and their families. Some 4,000 Scots youngsters have problems that cannot be corrected by glasses.
