Crisis highlights 'need for science'
The countrywide foot-and-mouth crisis illustrates the importance of science in everyday life, the president of the British Association for the Advancement of Science said today. Launching National Science Week, Sir William Stewart stressed the importance of scientists anticipating problems.
Government details access spending
The government has released details of how the £172 million allocated last November to widen access will be spent over the next three years. Further education will receive £20 million in 2002-03 and £46 million in 2003-04. Higher education will receive £15 million in 2002-03 and £41 million the year after. Adult and community learning will get £11 million and £24 million; Youth Service provision will receive £7 million and £8 million.
Homeless helped towards university
A guide to help homeless young people get into university was launched today by the Foyer Federation. About 5,000 young people a year miss the opportunity and require more information on the obstacles, the charity reckons.
Students encouraged to be more neighbourly
A poster compaign at Edinburgh University is encouraging good relations between students and their neighbours. One urging students to remember to put their rubbish out on time features the slogan “Always Remember the Old Bag Downstairs”.
