Sainsbury among Labour's big donors
Science minister Lord Sainsbury is one of two £2 million benefactors the Labour Party has been forced to name. The other is Christopher Ondaatje, a member of the board of trustees of the Royal Geographical Society, who made his fortune in publishing and finance.

Graduate teacher training applications plummet
Teacher training applications from graduates have fallen drastically. Data from the Graduate Teacher Registry show a fall of 2,289 —16.1 per cent — compared with this time last year. The Department for Education and Employment said it is too early to predict this year’s total applications.

Overweight children on the rise
The number of overweight schoolchildren has risen by about 4 per cent since the mid-1980s. Researchers from the public health sciences department at King’s College, London, have found that by 1994, 9 per cent of English and 10 per cent of Scottish boys were overweight. For girls the figures were 13.5 per cent in England and 15.8 per cent in Scotland.
