Science salaries could top 100K
Scientists could earn £100,000 or more under a scheme to stem the UK’s “brain drain”. Vice-chancellors are being invited to bid for grants for their researchers from a £4 million annual fund set up by the Department of Trade and Industry and the Wolfson Foundation.

Stress relief may be stressful
Measures taken by firms to tackle workplace stress might be doing more harm than good. In a survey for the British Safety Council, Rob Briner, senior lecturer in organisational psychology at Birkbeck College, London, said there was little evidence that stress management policies introduced in recent years worked.

Darwin's garden muse restored
A half-acre garden which inspired Charles Darwin to sketch his evolutionary theories is being restored to its 19th-century glory. English Heritage is recapturing the atmosphere of the kitchen garden on the estate in Downe, Kent, as part of a five-year restoration programme.

Pizza house employs three PhDs
Domino’s Pizza takeaway in Cardiff claims to employ the “upper crust” of workers. Three staff who work full time preparing food have PhDs. Samantha Greaves, who graduated in social policy, said: “We might be part of something rather unique.” Many other staff are undergraduates working part time.
