Wellcome Trust closes Oxford centre
The Wellcome Trust is disbanding its Oxford University-based Centre for the Epidemiology of Infectious Disease, because its search for a new director had been unsuccessful. The trust said there would be a two-year transition period.

Wet winter warning
This winter is expected to be milder, wetter and more stormy than average across the United Kingdom and northwest Europe. A team of scientists from University College London's Benfield Greig Hazard Research Centre made the forecast using a new method of predicting the North Atlantic Oscillation.

Designer chickens lay cancer cure
Scientists from the Roslin Institute in Edinburgh today unveiled proposals to create designer chickens whose eggs may help produce drugs to fight cancer. The chickens will be created by US biotech company Viragen and the institute responsible for cloning Dolly the sheep.
