Chancellor Gordon Brown has given research and innovation a helping hand in his pre-budget statement. Mr Brown said there would be consultation on tax relief for intellectual property and goodwill and an examination of proposals to extend research and development tax credit.

A national centre that aims to get to grips with climate change opened today at the University of East Anglia as Britain copes with the worst floods for decades. Director of The Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research, Mike Hume, said: “Society is, at last, waking up to climate change.”
V-c urges convictions disclosure
Lincolnshire and Humberside University vice-chancellor David Chiddick has called for a change in employment law after a former lecturer went to prison for lying about his criminal record. Russell Griffiths, who was cleared by a jury last month of raping an 18-year-old undergraduate, kept secret a string of criminal convictions.
