London Metroplitan University mooted
London Metropolitan University is the preferred name for the institution created by the merger of London Guildhall University and the University of North London, it emerged last night. The name will now be subject to further consultation and consideration by the Privy Council.

Mature student applications dwindle
The fewest ever UK mature applicants were accepted to full-time degree courses in 2000, according to the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service. The data suggest that while HND courses were successful in attracting more mature students, "accessibility to higher education in general [was] becoming more difficult for this cohort".
