Scottish universities demand more money
The Scottish Executive was today under pressure to find extra cash after the good showing of Scottish universities in the research assessment exercise. John Sizer, chief executive of the Scottish Higher Education Funding Council warned the executive that the universities will now need more money if they are to continue their good work.
Britain's European research position slipping
British business schools are only just holding on to their position as leaders in Europe for research. Only five of the top ten research schools are in the UK this year, compared to seven last year in an analysis by Charles Baden-Fuller and Siah Hwee Ang of City University Business School.
Congolese policemen killed at student demo
Three policemen have been stabbed to death at the University of Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo during student demonstrations for the reduction of tuition fees. Up to 3,000 students fought with 40 armed police officers who were protecting two government ministers on the campus.
Mexican paramilitaries in the firing line
The Mexican magazine Proceso has published photographs showing that paramilitary forces hired to provide security during the 1968 Olympic games were implicated in the deaths of students shot during a demonstration in Mexico City. The government has put the deaths at 24 but historians say about 300 students died.
Celebrity chefs destroying morale in UK kitchens
The popularity of celebrity chefs has resulted in fewer Britons holding dinner parties, according to a survey published today. Psychologist David Warburton of Reading University who conducted the survey has identified Kitchen Performance Anxiety syndrome, for those who fear being judged on their cooking and entertaining.
