Lib Dems back student grants
Liberal Democrats today called on the government to abolish student tuition fees and restore maintenance grants. The motion was passed at the party’s conference in Bournemouth, as was an amendment from Liberal Democrat Youth and Students that called for a higher income threshold at which graduates start repaying student loans, and the reinstatement of social security benefits for students.

Fighting fire with condoms
Condoms with the message “Let this be the only fire you light tonight!” printed on them are being issued free to Oxford University undergraduates as part of a fire-safety campaign. Oxfordshire’s chief fire officer said there were 400 fire-related deaths and 10,000 injuries in England and Wales every year, most of which were in multiple-occupation houses like those favoured by students.
