Ucas predicts record university entrant numbers
Numbers of applicants accepted by universities look set to break all records this year with the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service predicting they will be up by some five per cent. As of September 18, the total number of accepted applicants stood at 344,478, up 5.5 per cent on last year. Clearing is due to end on Friday although some late applications will be processed after that date.
Sleep survey will help experts wake up to UK problems
Results of the first national survey of sleep clinics in the United Kingdom and Ireland are being presented at a three-day meeting of sleep experts at Robinson College, Cambridge. The annual conference of the British Sleep Society hopes to use the survey to confront some of the problems that affect up to a quarter of the population.
Queen's to house cardinal's library
Queen’s University, Belfast, has inaugurated the Cardinal Cahal Daly library at its Armagh campus. The retired archbishop of Armagh, former Catholic primate of All Ireland, donated his library of more than 10,000 books to Queen’s, to be housed in its outreach centre.
US universities attacked by email virus
Computer networks at several United States universities have been hit by a new “worm” virus called Nimda. US attorney general John D. Ashcroft said there was no evidence linking the assault to last week's terrorist attacks in New York and Washington.
