Police open fire at student demo
At least two people were seriously injured when police in Malawi opened fire on student demonstrators protesting against the death in police custody of an outspoken reggae musician in the university town of Zomba. Shooting began after teargas was fired into university buildings.

US don banned for Pentagon quip
A University of New Mexico history professor who joked in class that "anyone who can blow up the Pentagon has my vote" has been banned from teaching first-year students and reprimanded. Richard Berthold has apologised.   

Cash boost for Canadian research
Canada’s budget includes C$1 billion (£485 million) for research and skills development over three years, including C$200 million to cover the "indirect" costs of scientific studies. The budget includes increases for most of the federal agencies that support university research.
