Student killed in Congo demonstrations
One student has been killed and several lecturers arrested during protests at the University of Congo. Students and lecturers were demonstrating against the refusal of controlling rebel forces to allow Democratic Republic of Congo government officials to pay staff salaries and give students their bursaries, which have been withheld for the past three years.
Recovering US turns down García Márquez gem
A first draft of One Hundred Years of Solitude by the Colombian novelist and 1982 Nobel laureate Gabriel García Márquez remained unsold at auction in Spain. An unnamed US university, which had offered to pay the starting price of $521,300 (£350,000), withdrew following the US government's call for reduced spending after the terrorist attacks.
Edinburgh academic wins Australian fellowship
15 Federation Fellowships, worth A$17 million (£5.6 million) and announced by prime minister John Howard on Tuesday, include Huw Price, who was recently appointed to the chair of logics and metaphysics at the University of Edinburgh.
