US colleges get £4.5m for summer study
United States universities and colleges have received grants totalling £4.5 million for summer study programmes, curriculum development and research at minority-oriented colleges and universities from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Researcher jailed for spying in China
Gao Zhan, an unpaid researcher at the American University in Washington, has been jailed for ten years on charges of spying for Taiwan by a Chinese court. The sociologist, who has permanent US resident status, is accused of helping a Chinese-born American business professor, Li Shaomin, convicted earlier this month and ordered to be deported.
