Lesbians continue suit against US university
Two lesbians can continue the US's first legal challenge to university policy that excludes gays from subsidised campus housing for couples, New York's appeals court ruled early this week. The two former medical students filed a lawsuit against Yeshiva University for discrimination in 1998, but it was rejected by lower courts.

Italian scientists gain ownership of discoveries
New Italian legislation gives scientists in state universiities and research institutes the ownership of any discoveries they make. The institution will get 33 per cent of royalties. The law is intended to encourage the commercial exploitation of research.

Medical exam finals annulled in Uruguay
The Universidad de la Republica in Montevideo has annulled 394 medical exam finals in paediatrics and surgery after the discovery that the examining professor used materials that had been freely available to students on the internet. The university’s medical faculty has reported the incident to Uruguay's health ministry.
