Ethiopia releases academics after month in jail
Two leading Ethiopian academics have been released on bail after 28 days in jail in Addis Ababa. Mesfin Wolde Mariam and Birhanu Nega have denied accusations of inciting university students to riot and belonging to the illegal Ethiopian Democratic League.

Russia cuts sentence for US student
A US postgraduate student in Russia has had his sentence for drugs charges reduced from three years in jail to one. Fulbright scholar John Tobin, who was studying at Voronezh State University, was convicted in April of possessing marijuana.

Former Rwandan professor guilty of war crimes
A former Rwandan university professor was one of four people found guilty today of war crimes by a Belgian jury. Academic Vincent Ntezimana, a government minister and two Roman Catholic nuns were convicted for their role in the massacre of Tutsis in 1994. All four had maintained their innocence.
