US gets medical rival to Nobel
An 89-year-old industrialist has established the United States’ largest award for medical research, rivalling the Nobel Prize, with a $50 million endowment. From next year, the $500,000 Albany Medical Center Prize in Medicine and Biomedical Research will be awarded annually for the next 100 years. The benefactor is Morris Silverman, founder of National Equipment Rental.

Sorbonne students promised shelter during renovation
France's education ministry has promised to find accommodation for students during renovation of the Sorbonne, after governors threatened to cancel all courses in protest against unsafe and overcrowded buildings. The university said it would have to close within two years if it was not immediately allocated additional premises in the Latin Quarter.
