Kroto wants more baskets

Britain's only science Nobel prize winner this decade has said that research funding should not be limited to just a few universities, writes Julia Hinde.

When Sir Harry Kroto was being presented with an honorary degree by Sussex University he told the congregation that "all the eggs in the Oxford, Cambridge, London basket is ultimately a disastrous policy".

"It seems obvious to me that what we should be working for is as much diversity and as much intellectual equality among as many universities as possible," said Sir Harry, who has lectured and researched at Sussex University for 20 years.
