The Irish Council for Science, Technology and Innovation (ICSTI), responsible for advising the government on science and innovation policy, is to be disbanded this year.
The Council was created in 1997. It is run on a voluntary basis by 25 prominent figures from Irish science, while the secretariat is provided by Forfás, the national policy and advisory board for enterprise, investment, trade and innovation. The Council will be disbanded in accordance with its own recommendations, issued within a 2002 report presented to Enterprise, Trade and Employment Minister Mary Harney.
In a statement issued on 15 September, the current chair of the ICSTI, Dr Edward M Walsh, welcomed progress towards a new science and technology policy and the implementation of its recommendations. The new framework includes the appointment of a Chief Science Adviser to the Government and the establishment of an inter-departmental committee and a Cabinet committee on science and technology.
