Brussels, 11 Mar 2003

VOICE events - The VOICE Project organised and presented VOICE at a large number of international workshops and congresses in order to develop an awareness rising process on the potential of voice-to-text recognition systems.

Approximately 6000 participants attended the presentations, in which a prototype of automatic subtitling, developed for this aim, was used to on-line subtitle the speeches, as a demonstration of feasibility and a way of validation on the field. VOICE events for Year 2003 - The VOICE Project has organised several activities for the European Year of People with Disabilities 2003, and encourages and collaborates with others on activities proposed by other partners.

The events will spread information on the results achieved by the VOICE Project and the Development and Harmonisation of Subtitling in European Television Broadcasting Project and propose new activities. VOICE will continue the contacts with the television broadcasters and will increase the collaboration with universities for helping students with hearing impairment by subtitling the lectures.

It will also continue collaborating with the other European Commission Directorates General, directly and via the InterService Group on Disability. The VOICE Web Site and Discussion Forum follow the basic rules to make Web Sites accessible by people with disabilities and care will be spent on this aspect, proposing the Site in Year 2003 as a test reference for all users, particularly for the JRC and other EC Directorates General colleagues.
