The challenge and the opportunity that the use of recovered paper as a raw material offers is the subject of an international symposium on 'New technological developments in paper recycling' on 12 and13 June 2003 in Valencia, Spain.

Recovered paper is fast becoming a primary raw material for the paper industry. It now provides close to 50 per cent of the fibre input for papermaking in Europe.

Economics and environmental factors, coupled with a need to optimise the use of existing raw materials, have been the driving forces for this fascinating development in the paper industry. However, none of this would had been possible without the development of paper recycling technologies that have opened up new possibilities for the use of secondary fibre in new paper grades and in increasing proportions.

Organised by the Spanish Paper Institute (IPE) together with the Centre Technique du Papier (CTP) and the Papiertechnische Stiftung (PTS), the event aims to attract first class presentations on innovative and emerging solutions to the challenges presented by today's and tomorrow's paper recycling.
