In the Sixth Framework Programme the work of the JRC will be implemented through Integrated Scientific Areas that are driven by Thematic Research Priorities.
Each Integrated Scientific Area will involve two or more Institutes, reflecting the importance of cross-Institute and inter-disciplinary collaboration for meeting increasingly complex tasks and using resources more efficiently. At present the structure and titles of Integrated Scientific Areas and the use of JRC's resources are being discussed within the JRC, with the JRC Board of Governors and the European Commission's General Directorates.
The result of these consultations will be the JRC multi-annual workprogramme 2003-2006 that has to be adopted by the Commission after inter-service consultations.
In order to foster this process, a set of Thematic Leaflets describing some research areas, where the JRC has got profound scientific experience and where cross-Institute and cross-disciplinary collaboration is already well-established and particularly useful, has been developed.
