Innovation is all about connections - frequently to research results and science. A new database of European technology transfer institutions not only shows how many such institutions exist, but also how to contact them.
The database lists over 1,500 institutions and organisations both within the current Member States and the acceding countries. It provides searchable contact information, and, for over 700 establishments, additional information about types of activity and science and technology areas covered. The accompanying overview describes the survey and defines the types, roles and activities of the technology transfer institutions studied. The results make clear that technology transfer is not a one-way street from researcher to businessman, but a complex relationship.
This catalogue and survey are the first deliverables of an ongoing study (ITTE) being undertaken by the Enterprise Directorate-General. It is aimed at improving return on investment in research and speeding up the commercialisation of research results. Delegated experts from 23 Member States and acceding countries are preparing a report and recommendations which are due for publication in June this year.
In the future the database will be maintained and enhanced by the Public Research Organisations' Technology Offices Network (ProTon), another Enterprise Directorate-General initiative.
