Seven universities shared £31 million under the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council's science and innovation awards this week.

The winners of the awards, which were jointly funded by the funding councils, were: Oxford, £3.3 million; Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt, £3.4 million; Cardiff, £3.8 million; Sheffield, £4.3 million; Strathclyde and Glasgow, £4.4 million; Cambridge, Oxford and Imperial College London, £6 million; Birmingham and Nottingham, £6 million.

The research areas range from renewable energy generation to physical organic chemistry and establishing a Midlands ultracold atom research centre.
