India will set up 40 specialist higher education institutions and 30 universities, the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, has announced. He said that the country would establish five institutes for science education and research, eight for technology, seven for management, and 20 for information technology. There would also be 30 new universities. Mr Singh also announced a national push on vocational education with the creation of 1,600 new industrial training institutes and polytechnics, 10,000 vocational schools and 50,000 skill development centres. "I am sure that, working together, we can ensure that at least a fifth of our children go to college as compared with one tenth now," he said.
