John Sutherland, the Lord Northcliffe professor of modern English literature at University College London, this week revealed in his Guardian column that his copy of Sylvia Plath's Ariel is 37 years overdue from the University of Leicester library. Leicester is keeping a dignified silence over this misconduct by a former student. Had it known, would it have awarded him an honorary LLD in 1998?
