(Photograph) - An extensive British canal network was one of the winning solutions for transport problems proposed by students this week as part of the European Week for Scientific and Technological Culture.
The Southampton University students aired their views at yesterday's finale in London of the Visions for the Future programme, the United Kingdom's contribution to the European week, an European Union effort to promote science and technology among the public and policy-makers.
The transport project was organised by the British Association for the Advancement of Science, and included a series of lectures by transport experts, visits to development sites (including the Jubilee Line extension) and yesterday's concluding presentation of bright new ideas by students from across Europe. The gathering was decorated with illustrations of unlikely but thought-provoking transport solutions by cartoonists (see above).
Initiatives run by partner states include a project promoting awareness of space research in Germany, France and Belgium, and a daring experiment on sleep research in Finland.
