Hundreds join the race for inaugural honours

More than 250 entries have been submitted by 111 institutions for Times Higher Education's inaugural Leadership and Management Awards, run in association with the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education.

The new awards were established in the wake of overwhelming interest at last year's Times Higher Education Awards. Whereas those awards celebrate excellence across the whole range of higher education activities, from widening access to cutting-edge research, the Leadership and Management Awards recognise the skills of the staff who run universities, from human resources to estates management teams.

"It is about time there was an event to recognise the diverse range of leadership skills required to run universities," said Ann Mroz, editor of Times Higher Education. "They manage budgets worth billions of pounds, employing thousands of people across a range of activities in highly collegiate environments. Universities contribute billions of pounds to the economy while pursuing knowledge for its own sake.

"I'm pleased that so many people from so many institutions are proud enough of their work to put themselves forward for recognition, and I'm delighted to be able to celebrate their achievements."

The shortlists will be revealed in Times Higher Education on 19 March. The winners will be announced at a dinner in the London Hilton, Park Lane, on 9 June.
