How to join the ILT club

A club no one wants to join. Just weeks from its launch date, the Institute for Learning and Teaching is in trouble

What academics must do to become members of the Institute for Learning and Teaching Academics must present evidence to support all or most of the 24 outcomes listed below, as well as provide reflections on the evidence for each group of outcomes - including an overview of professional strengths and limitations and a continuing professional development plan.

The outcomes fall under five broad areas of responsibility. Associate members would be expected to achieve half of them.

Outcomes: A. Design and plan a course:

* Specify the learning outcomes

* Plan a structured programme of content and learning activities/teaching strategies appropriate to the group

* Plan the separate learning activities/ teaching sessions and the associated student work assignments

* Design and/or select a range of learning resources for the course

* Design ways of informing students of the outcomes and standards expected of them B. Teach and support learning in the subject

* Structure and present ideas, information and instruction in different ways according to the learning situation

* Encourage and support students' active learning

* Encourage and support interactive and cooperative learning

* Provide opportunities for both informal and formal contact and plan tutorials with individual students

* Make appropriate use of teaching resources

* Identify ways of developing students' transferable and study skills

* Create opportunities for appropriate innovation in learning and teaching practice C. Assess students' learning achievements

* Develop an assessment strategy for a course

* Devise assessment criteria for a range of tasks

* Implement an assessment programme with agreed criteria and marking schemes

* Use assessed work formatively to review students' progress and help them to improve D. Contribute to the maintenance of student support systems

* Work within established regulations and professional codes of conduct

* Maintain professional relationships, and work productively with colleagues

* Provide appropriate personal support for individual students

* Anticipate and respond to changes in the learning environment E. Evaluate and improve the teaching process

* Review and evaluate their contributions to the design/ planning process

* Review and evaluate their own work in teaching and support of learning

* Review and evaluate their contribution to assessment

* Review and evaluate their contribution to the maintenance and improvement of student support systems.

Registration is proposed for three years. Thereafter a professional development record would be submitted for renewed membership.
