Meanwhile, keeping to working hours threatens a mutinous response at the University of Central England. A new code of practice for working at home has been drawn up. More information must now be provided regarding the nature of any work undertaken at home - this will be written in a book, and terms such as "preparation" are considered too vague. No more than one day a week can be spent working from home. Ringing in on the morning is no longer acceptable. Annual leave will be docked for non-compliance.

Our mole complained: "No nonsense is allowed about the staff being able to come and go as they judge appropriate. Such things may be traditional freedoms of academic life at other universities but, at the University of Central England, such notions are considered to be skiving."
