Cambridge University has accepted a Pounds 16.5 million donation from Hong Kong multinational conglomerate Hutchinson Whampoa. The money will be used to build a cancer research centre on the Addenbrooke's Hospital campus, in partnership with the Imperial Cancer Research Fund. The centre, expected to be completed by 2004, will house up to 200 research staff in 30 research groups funded by the ICRF and the university. It will join an earlier Hutchinson-sponsored laboratory, the Hutchinson-Medical Research Council Research Centre, due to open in Cambridge in early 2001.
