The government has achieved its target of increasing the number of medical students by more than 2,000, two years ahead of schedule, John Reid, the health secretary, said this week. Figures from the Higher Education Funding Council for England show that 6,030 students entered medical school in England in 2003, a 60 per cent rise on 1997.
